Having Trouble with a BlackBerry (slowness, losing messages, and other issues)? Try Updating the Software in 10 Simple Steps.
Do you often experience problems with you BlackBerry? Well, many of your problems can be solved by simply updating the software. I was initially hesitant about updating a mobile device since I had never done so before. I had the perception that only someone who is tech-savvy would be able to successfully complete this mountain of a task. Even with all of these premonitions, I decided to give it a go by following instructions on BlackBerry’s Web site. Am I ever glad that I tried because it was far more simple than I made it out to be and now I have a device that runs smoother and doesn’t get all buggy! I’ve included some easy to complete steps below to help you along with the process if the BlackBerry Web site seems like jargon to you.
You’ll need a couple things first:
A computer.
A USB cable to connect your BlackBerry to the computer.
Installed BlackBerry Desktop Manager (the computer software that came with your device).
Let’s get started with these ten simple steps:
1. Connect the device to the computer by using your USB cable.
2. Download the updated software from your mobile carrier’s Web site (such as T-Mobile) and save it to a location you will remember.
3. On your computer, open up the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and the software should automatically recognize your device.
4. Click Application Loader.
5. Click Update Now (This only appears when new device software is available), then Next to open the ‘Handheld Application Selection’ window.
6. Select the updated software version check box to install the new software, then click Next.
7. Select the first option to back up all your device data. It will reload once your update is complete, then click Next, then Finish.
8. A loading bar will appear, your device will reset. Don’t be alarmed if it takes a few minutes for this process to complete.
9. Click Close.
10. Success! You have now updated the software for your device and can experience the joys of using a device that does not have bugs or errors.

My initial guide for this procedure was provided BlackBerry. I used their process to help walk me through completing this procedure on my own. See the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/supportcentral/supportcentral.do?id=m1 and check article KB03621) for a more technical and detailed process above.
