Why and How to Defragment your Computer in 5 Simple Steps

Defragmenting your computer may seem like a task that only the most advance techie would be able to complete. But don’t let the name fool you, defragmenting your computer will enhance the performance of your computer (i.e, make it run faster!) and anyone can do it with just a couple clicks of the mouse.

On the basic level defragmenting a computer re-organizes files and processes to optimize the space they use on the computer. It’s like giving the computer time to ‘clean the bedroom’. By defragmenting your computer on a regular basis, you will save time and money in the long run (money by not buying a new computer so quickly!)

Ready to get started? Great!

Note: Be prepared to step away from your computer for length of time. Depending on your computer, the defragmenting may take a long amount of time to complete. Don’t worry, you can walk away and use the time to exercise, clean, or cook a delicious meal!

1. From your Windows based computer, click the Start menu (in the bottom-left of the screen).

2. Click Programs, then Accessories.

3. Click System Tools, then Disk Defragmenter.

4. Click Defragment.

5. Your computer will now go to work and you can let the process run until completion. When the process ends, click OK.

I would recommend restarting your computer after this process. Now notice how much faster simple processes on your computer will run, leaving you with more time to take care of the work you need to do!
